Sadaqatul Fitr in the Light of the Qur’an

Author: Mahtab Akand

All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Praise be to Allah who revealed the Book to His servant. Praise be to Allah who created the human being and taught him expression. Peace be upon Muhammad who came with the Qur’an as a guardian over truth. Peace be upon all the messengers.

At the end of the month of Ramadan, one topic often arises in almost every Muslim household: Sadaqatul Fitr. Some call it Fitra, some consider it wajib, and others even describe it as obligatory. However, a Qur’an-conscious Muslim should ask a very simple question first: Where is it mentioned in the Qur’an?

Before answering this question, we must clarify a fundamental principle: who has the authority to make something obligatory in religion?

Can any human being declare something as a religious obligation? Can even a messenger establish a new mandatory command from his own authority?

The Qur’an answers this clearly.

“Judgment belongs to none but Allah.”
(Surah Yusuf 12:40)

This verse emphasizes that the authority of command and legislation belongs to Allah alone. The power to determine what is lawful, unlawful, or obligatory rests solely with Him.

Allah also says:

“Surely His is the creation and His is the command.”
(Surah Al-A‘raf 7:54)

The One who created humanity is the One who establishes the laws governing human life. Therefore, the ultimate authority in matters of religion belongs to Allah.

What then is the role of the Messenger?

The Qur’an clarifies that the Messenger’s duty is to convey and follow revelation.

Allah says:

“Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord.”
(Surah Al-An‘am 6:106)

And He also says:

“The duty of the Messenger is only to convey the message clearly.”
(Surah An-Nur 24:54)

Thus, according to the Qur’an, the Messenger delivers Allah’s message, explains it, and establishes it among people. He does not create new religious obligations independently.

Now we return to the main question: does the Qur’an contain the term “Sadaqatul Fitr” as a specific obligation at the end of Ramadan?

The answer is no.

The Qur’an speaks extensively about charity (sadaqah), zakat, and the rights of the poor, the needy, the orphan, and the deprived. However, the Qur’an does not mention a specific obligatory charity at the end of Ramadan called Sadaqatul Fitr.

Whenever the Qur’an makes something obligatory, it does so clearly.

For example, regarding fasting:

“Fasting has been prescribed for you.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183)

Regarding prayer:

“Establish prayer.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:43)

Regarding zakat:

“Give zakat.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:43)

These commands are explicit and direct. But the Qur’an nowhere states that a specific charity called Sadaqatul Fitr at the end of Ramadan has been made obligatory.

The Qur’an also declares:

“Today I have perfected your religion for you.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:3)

A perfected religion means that its essential obligations are clearly defined. What Allah has made obligatory is explicitly mentioned.

However, this does not mean helping the poor at the end of Ramadan is wrong. On the contrary, helping the needy is deeply aligned with the Qur’anic spirit of justice and compassion.

The Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes the rights of the poor.

Allah says:

“And in their wealth there is a recognized right for the beggar and the deprived.”
(Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:19)

Here the word right is crucial. It shows that caring for the poor is not merely charity—it is social justice.

Allah also says:

“They give food, out of love for Him, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive.”
(Surah Al-Insan 76:8)

Feeding the poor and supporting those in need are therefore strongly encouraged in the Qur’an.

If someone provides food to poor families before Eid, this is consistent with the Qur’anic principle of feeding the needy. If someone supports struggling families financially, this too is a noble act of charity.

However, it is important to distinguish between a commendable act and a divinely mandated obligation.

The Qur’an encourages charity as a means of spiritual purification.

Allah says:

“Take charity from their wealth in order to purify and cleanse them.”
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:103)

Charity purifies the heart, reduces greed, and connects people with one another through compassion and generosity.

Therefore, helping the poor at the end of Ramadan is a beautiful and meaningful act. Families can provide food such as rice, flour, oil, and dates to those in need. Financial assistance can also be given to the poor, the orphan, the indebted, or those without income.

Special attention should be given to families who may struggle to obtain food on the day of Eid. Caring for relatives, neighbors, laborers, single mothers, elderly individuals, and the sick reflects the practical social ethics of the Qur’an.

Ramadan is not merely a period of personal worship; it is a time to develop empathy and social responsibility.

The Qur’an warns strongly against ignoring the needs of the poor:

“Have you seen the one who denies the religion? That is the one who repels the orphan and does not encourage feeding the needy.”
(Surah Al-Ma‘un 107:1-3)

This powerful passage shows that neglecting the poor contradicts the moral message of faith.

Thus, providing food and assistance to the needy at the end of Ramadan reflects the compassionate spirit of the Qur’an.

Yet it remains important to remember that Qur’anic ethics and Qur’anic obligations are not identical.

What Allah declares obligatory is explicitly stated. Charity, however, remains a highly encouraged and purifying act.

In conclusion, when discussing Sadaqatul Fitr in the light of the Qur’an, the position becomes clear. The Qur’an does not establish a specific obligation under this name. However, helping the poor, feeding the needy, and supporting disadvantaged members of society before Eid is entirely consistent with Qur’anic values.

The true spirit of Ramadan is realized when the experience of fasting inspires believers to relieve the suffering of others.

An ideal society is one in which no household remains hungry on the day of Eid.

This is the path of responsibility, justice, and compassion taught by the Qur’an.

And Allah knows best.
